Milk face
Told you the girl is a piggy. She gulps so fast, she dribbles on her chin. I spoke too soon about our good day. Apparently, she's a morning person. By late afternoon, she was pretty moody and irritable again. The poor girl has some seriously stinky gas issues. She only poops once a day and hasn't quite cleared out the sticky brown stuff yet. I know, that probably grossed out a couple of you. Deal with it. Moms talk about poop.
She did take another 3 hr nap this afternoon, on me. Which, I guess, makes me sit down and take a break, at least. I'll forgive her, her irritability as long as graces me with her sleepy baby smiles.
Here are a few hospital pics, since I haven't posted any of those yet.

Luckily, I watched her come out of my body and she never left my room, so there were no doubts she's mine, despite the dark hair. Bobby had some doubts she's his though. :op I had to remind him that most of the people in the family have brown hair. He says he was a blond when he was a kid. Uh, yeah honey, but what color is your hair now? Brown. I thought she didn't really look like any of us either, but lying in bed yesterday, staring at her, I realized that her scrunched up little sumo wrestler look resembled my newborn pics. It's about time I got one that looks like me.

Day 5
Today has been a better day. Tess is figuring out her schedule. She actually slept for 5 hours last night. I, of course, did not. I kept waking up wondering why she wasn't waking up. Then this morning, after a quick bath and a fill up, she took a 3 hour nap. In her crib, no less. She's still pretty gassy, and stinky gas, at that. I'll be glad when we hit the non smelly breastmilk poop stage. Amazingly, we're not there yet, which is surprising because she eats like a little piggy.
Tatum is still wanting to carry her around everywhere, which is helpful, yet annoying. It's helpful when I need to do something else, like pee, or feed another kid. But annoying when Tess is asleep and Tatum insists on picking her up.

Oh, there's another one of those kids.
Speaking of those other kids, I did get Tatum registered for Kindergarten. She'll have screening next week, then start school on Aug 26. The boys start next Wednesday. Tanner had a junior high orientation last night to get to know the principal, walk the halls, learn how to use a locker. It's hard to believe I have a middle schooler. I mean, he's not really in junior high. Well, technically, he is since that's how they do things in this little town. But really, he's only in 5th grade, which is still elementary school everywhere else. We asked Travis if he was excited to be going back to school. He said no, because second grade is harder. Hmmm, smart kid.
And an exchange with my not so smart kid...... I am constantly telling Tanner to pay attention when I tell him something because he will seriously forget it within 10 seconds. So, he knows we're going to this orientation thing, right?
So I say, "Tanner get your shoes and socks on so we can go."
After 10 seconds, he's back in the kitchen... "Did you say shoes and socks, or just socks?"
"Uh, Tanner, get whatever you need on your feet to walk out of the house."
"Oh."

The Diva and the Princess
While Tatum has always been a full blown diva, I think Tess may just be a princess. Yes, she prefers to be held, but she will at least tolerate the swing, swaddling, and the carseat.
Tatum is still loving her little sis. She's a big helper when Tess is fussing. She tells me, "She is calm with me." Yeah, I see your secret, Tate. The old thumb in the mouth trick.

The Little Mama
I guess this is how I will get the housework done. Tatum has been holding/carrying around Tess for the last hour or so. Now, she's lying on the couch with her while Tess sleeps. I don't know what I'll do when she goes off to Kindergarten in a couple weeks. :op

See the big scratch on Tate's cheek? Uh, that was Teagan's doing.

Adjusting
It's Tess's 3rd day, and we're slowly adjusting to her schedule. The first day home, she was pretty gassy and irritable. We were starting to think we might have another little diva on our hands. She would fuss if she wasn't held. Luckily though, she's feeling better today. And while she was up every 2 hours our first night home, she stretched it out to 3 hours a couple times last night.
We visited the pediatrician yesterday. She said Tess looks great, nice and pink with no signs of jaundice, probably because she's a piggy who gulps when she eats and pees and poops like crazy. They say she's down to 6 lbs 13 oz, but I'm not sure about that. She doesn't seem much smaller to me.
2 days old
I have figured out her usual routine. If she has a dry diaper and a full belly, I can get her to sleep a bit in the swing or lying down if she is swaddled. I managed to get a load of clothes in the wash, the bathroom cleaned, the upstairs vacuumed and a shower, all while she napped this morning.

I managed to get a load of clothes in the wash, the bathroom cleaned, the upstairs vacuumed and a shower, all while she napped this morning. Good thing, because the baby blues have hit. Hard. I was feeling like an emotional wreck this morning. Stuck somewhere between irritability, frustration, and sadness. I think I cried three times before 9 am. Over nothing at all, a song, a video, just holding Tess and staring at her little face. I feel a little better now after getting a few things accomplished and having a good cry in the shower. Not really a good one, but the ugly kind, the sobbing, lip pouting, snot dripping kind. The bad thing is, I'm a perfectionist. The other bad thing is, I'm lazy. So when I see things that need to be done, but don't feel like doing them, that contributes to the irritability. Combine that with 4 older squabbling children, and the post partum emotional roller coaster........ This morning was one of those "I'm not tough" mornings.
I think people assume that if you choose to have a large family you should just suck it up and take it. Nobody criticizes the Mom who says "I can barely handle the two I have", but ask the Mom who has 4 or more how many times she's heard you know what causes that, right? Or, you're the one who wanted to have another one. Yeah, moms of many chose this life, but that doesn't mean it's easy. We're not brave, or crazy. Yes, we have our hands full. And sometimes, a little acknowledgement that this is hard would be appreciated.

Baby T is here
Tess arrived Sunday, as expected. :o)
After spending Saturday evening at a luau party of a friend's, I got one last decent night of sleep. Okay, not that decent since I didn't go to bed until 2 am and I was up several times to use the bathroom. I awoke about 7:30 am to contractions every 5 minutes. I thought I would try lying in bed for an hour to see if they would continue. By 8:15, my moaning woke up Bobby. He got up, got the kids ready, fed them breakfast and got things packed into the car. I thought things got alot stronger fairly quickly, so we headed right in and made it to the hospital around 9:15.
My midwife was already there waiting for me. I asked her to check my cervix, on the condition that she wouldn't tell me I was only 3 cm dilated. She didn't. I was 7 cm and 100% effaced. I sat in the bed through a few contractions while they monitored baby, then spent some time on the birth ball. They had already filled the tub before I got there. Hmm, anticipating a speedy delivery? I'm not sure when I got in but it did feel alot better in the water, at least for a little bit. The contractions seemed to get alot more intense though and I just couldn't find a comfortable position. Between the contractions in the front and the pain in my low back, I couldn't decide which was worse. Kim( my CNM) talked me into getting out of the tub and sitting on the toilet for a couple contractions thinking that maybe baby's position was contributing to the back pain. Man, that was bad. I had her check me again while I was on the toilet because, even though I felt pressure in my butt, I just wasn't sure it was time yet. I tried pushing with a contraction and it didn't seem to feel any better. I was completely dilated though, just didn't have that strong urge to push yet.
So, back to the tub we went. Man, were those contractions intense. It hurt so much in my lower stomach and in my butt and trying to push just made the pain worse. Kim asked if I wanted her to break my water since I was really fighting the whole pushing idea. I agreed that it might help because I just didn't feel the pressure from her head telling me I needed to push. So, she broke my water, and even underwater, it still hurt. I was a little scared to push, one because it made the contractions hurt more, and two, because I had taken some Colace the night before and was afraid I might poop in the water. Gross.
I don't think I ever screamed, but I did whine, alot, and complain that "I can't do it, I changed my mind, I don't want to do it, it really hurts." I think the last thing I said before I gave up and decided to push was "I can't do it, I'm not that tough." I kept thinking that I was really wimping out and giving up. I started pushing and immediately felt things stretching "down there". I reached down and could feel the top of her head crowning, then her whole head seemed to squeeze right out into my hand. I remembered thinking that I didn't want to push anymore and all of a sudden she was floating out into the water. I had to sit up and reach out for her as she "swam" under my leg. Everyone said I only pushed once. It seemed longer, but I think, once she started coming, she just didn't stop. I really hope we got it on video. I'm afraid the DVD might have screwed up.
While I always said Teagan's birth was the most intense, I think this one was, in a different way. His was quick, but there was no denying when he was ready to come out, and even though it hurt, I felt like I was more in control. This time, the pain just seemed unbearable. And the fear of pushing was so intense, I thought labor might never end just because I would never want to push.
I was amazed, as I pulled her up out of the water and onto my chest, to discover that she has a head full of BROWN hair. Where did that come from? All the other kids were born with red hair. And even though the rest of them looked like clones as infants, this little girl looks like none of them.
So anyway, after almost 4 hours of labor, Tess made her appearance at 11:15 am on 8/10/08. The day I picked for her. :o) She weighs 7 pounds and 7 ounces, the biggest of them all, and is 20 inches long. (Teagan was born at 11:15 pm)
She is asleep here at my feet, and I am drifting off as a I type this. You'll have to wait for pictures because I forgot to bring the cord to upload the camera. :op We'll be going home tomorrow though. I think Krista will have a pic up over on her blog if you can't wait.

38w2d appt

Met with my midwife yesterday for another appt. All is well. Still have swollen, disgusting feet. Baby girl is sounding pretty content in there, and despite her doing big belly rolls yesterday morning, she is still head down.
I did ask her to check my cervix. Logistically, I just can't reach it, and I really wanted to know that all these annoying contractions are doing something "down there". She said I am at least 2 cm dilated but could be 4 cm if she stretched it, which she didn't want to do. She's not on call until the weekend so I didn't want her stirring things up at all until then. Basically, I have what we call in OB, a sloppy, multip cervix, which means it's really soft and stretchy and I can make it whatever size I want to. Yeah, so not only are my outsides a mess, my insides are too. Thanks kids.
Baby girl, who still remains nameless, has been alot more active lately. I don't know if that means she's working herself into a better spot, or I've had too many iced coffees and chocolate. The bad thing is, when she moves, she presses down on my cervix, which causes some sharp, stabbing pains "down there".
I lost a pound this week, which seems weird since I haven't changed my eating habits and I am still swollen. I seem to recall losing a pound or two with the other kids too, the last week before labor started.
I have it set in my mind that this girl will make her appearance this weekend. Partly because my favorite midwife and nurses work this weekend and that's what I want her to do, but also because my last three little humans came out 9-11 days early. Uh, I have 11 days left until my due date. I thought 8/8/08 would be a cool birthday, but I'm not really in the mood today, so I'm thinking Sunday works better for me. Are you taking notes, little girl? Plus, now I have all my crap in order. The bag is packed, the Ipod is mostly loaded, the camera is charged, the extra DVD's are bought....... Okay, so I'd like to clean the house really good one more time, and clean out my closet, and weed the garden, but I'm at the letting that all go stage. Although now, I have this fear that she'll never come out because I just keep calling her baby girl.
Maybe we'll pick a name before Kindergarten. Just when I think I've settled on something and damn Bobby and what he thinks, I start to think, well, the other name is cute too. Ugh! Why is picking a name that will last a child her entire lifetime and help define her as a person so hard?!?! Whine!!!
Hey, and would you believe my hospital now has wireless?!?! Pretty cool, huh?

Wanna see...
Something pretty?
Oh there's the swelling. My shoes pushed it up and my pants were hiding it.
I couldn't find Teagan in his bed when I came home from work, cuz he was in Tatum's.
Yeah, the end of the day, I can't fit my feet in my sandals. Sad, sad, sad. 13 more days.

Super nesting
I've been working on my to do list, and then some. Bobby says I'm just nesting. Well, duh. I managed to coerce him into moving the living and family rooms around. He was not happy about it, and of course, it had to turn into an argument about who does more around the house. Well, me, definitely. Yeah, he helps, but come on..... He seems to think that I just spend an inordinate amount of time on the computer and do absolutely nothing around here. That's right. Groceries just magically appear and his underwear wash and fold themselves. After picking themselves up off the bathroom floor, of course. I had to point out to him that my computer time is directly proportional to his TV time. So there!
He says he would feel sorry for me if the house was spotless when he came home. Yeah. He said that. Out loud. And then we got divorced.
I got to hear the "I work all day" argument, which translates as, "I'm totally self absorbed and forget that not only do you work full time too, but you're 9 months pregnant with MY BABY!!!, And your feet and ankles look like tree trunks." Ugh! Men!!!
So today, while my darling (eyes rolling back into my head) husband was having a day off with one of his buddies to go to a motorcycle race, I was doing laundry, cleaning bathrooms, freezing casseroles, reorganizing the living and family rooms, vacuuming, cleaning the kitchen, breaking up fights, oh, and watching my ankles enlarge. My dearest love came home, ate some of the homemade chicken noodle soup I made, watched some TV, fell asleep on the couch, then made an early retreat to bed.
And they wonder why we bash them.
I did learn though, that I'm not completely computer retarded. I managed to hook up the wireless, BY MYSELF! Okay, I did call a friend for reinforcement, but I actually figured it out before she got on the phone.
Time is running out. 15 days to go until my official due date. I've been telling everyone that I will deliver between the 8th and 11th though, which, eek!!!, is only 4 days away. Is it possible to be eagerly anticipating something but so not looking forward to it too? I wonder what this little girl will look like. Will she be a mellow baby like the boys, or a diva like her big sister? Will she look like Tatum? Will she have red hair? What about dimples? What about a name? She has been quite active the last few days, perhaps situating herself in there just right. Combined with BH contractions and the constant urge to pee, her movements are down right uncomfortable.
And then there is the whole labor thing. It's going to hurt. Darn it. Not really looking forward to that part of it. I have accepted that she will be born in the hospital, even after my fantabulous homebirth with Teagan. While it was incredibly intense and chaotic at points, it was the most intimate, empowering thing I have ever experienced. I'm scared I won't be able to recreate that feeling in the hospital and I will have regrets. Which sucks, since she will be the last, and I won't have the opportunity to "get it right". Some people just don't get that. You know, the whole, it's all about a healthy Mom and baby. Sure, that's the most important part of it, but it's not the only part. It's also about the experience, how she transitions from being a part of me to being an extension of me. Was it smooth for both of us? Do we have good memories of it?
Ah well, just the late night, early morning ramblings of a very pregnant woman. I guess I'll just let you know how it goes.

37w3d
Another appt and another 2 pounds. Ugh! That brings the total up to 24 pounds. I was hoping to keep it to a bare minimum, like 10 pounds. :op Nothing too interesting going on. My feet and ankles are still swollen, and everything else is normal. I'm measuring 36 weeks, which looking down, makes sense. It seems like my belly is a little lower, so I'm thinking she has dropped, which could explain why I feel like I need to use the bathroom everytime I have a contraction.
I'm hoping we only have one more week left. I'm physically ready to be done, although not sure I'm mentally ready yet. I still feel like there's so much to get done. Although, I'm sure the rest of the family is ready for me to be past the supreme irritability stage.

Tanner took these pics. Of course, I was giving him directions, which explains why my mouth is hanging open.
And to compare, this last one is 34 weeks in the same shirt.
And a couple gratuitous sleeping children pics. Aren't they sweet like this?
